Ginger
Ginger is used to treating a number of health conditions, including asthma. Studies have revealed that ginger reduces inflammation in the airways. Researchers have also found that compounds in ginger help improve the muscle relaxant effects of some asthma medications.
You can take ginger in any of these ways to get relief from asthma symptoms:
Mix equal portions of ginger juice, honey, and pomegranate juice. Take 1 tablespoon of this mixture 2 or 3 times a day.
Ground some ginger and take 1 teaspoon of powdered ginger and mix it to 1 ½ cups of water. Take 1 tablespoon of the mixture before retiring to bed.
Slice off 1 inch of ginger and cut it into finer pieces. Add them to a pot containing boiling water and let it remain soaked for about 5 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool down and drink.
This decoction helps in detoxifying your lungs. Take 1 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds and add it to a pot of water. Boil the mixture and add 1 teaspoon of honey and ginger juice in it. Drink the mixture once each morning and evening.
If you want, you can eat raw ginger mixed with a pinch of table salt.
Mustard Oil
A massage with mustard oil helps make the respiratory passages clear and normalize your breathing.
Take some mustard oil, add a little camphor to it, heat the mixture.
When the oil becomes comfortably warm, rub it on your chest as well as upper back.
Massage your chest and upper back with the oil at frequent intervals until the asthma symptoms subside.
Figs
Figs have nutritional properties that help remove phlegm and alleviate difficulty in breathing.
Take 3 dried figs, wash them, and then soak them in a small bowl of water overnight.
The next day, consume the soaked figs and drink the water in the bowl on an empty stomach.
Garlic
Garlic is another natural remedy effective in asthma treatment. It is most effective when asthma symptoms are starting to appear. It helps by clearing congestion in the chest.
Take 2 or 3 cloves, mix it in a quarter cup of milk, and then boil the milk which is then ready to drink.
Coffee
Coffee is actually a healthy drink and provides a range of health benefits, including helping control an asthma attack. Caffeine acts in a manner of bronchodilator by relaxing and clearing the airways, allowing you to breathe more normally.
Though coffee may help in relieving your asthma symptoms, be mindful to drink too many cups too; three cups in a day is the recommended maximum. In case you are not a coffee drinker, hot black tea is a good replacement option for you.
Eucalyptus Oil
Another effective home remedy for asthma is eucalyptus oil, which acts as a decongestant, thanks to eucalyptol, an ingredient in eucalyptus oil that helps break up mucus.
Take a paper towel and add a few drops of this oil on it. Keep the paper towel beside your head as you sleep. This way you will be able to breathe in the aroma of eucalyptus oil.
Alternatively, boil some water in which 2 to 3 drops of this oil have been added, and then breath in the steam. Taking deep breathes will give better results.
Honey
Recorded as one of the earliest natural cures for this respiratory condition, honey has ethereal and alcohol oils which help alleviate the symptoms.
Some people noted an improvement in their condition just by inhaling the smell of honey!
Take 1 teaspoon of honey and mix it into a glass of hot water. Drink this 2 or 3 times a day.
Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Swallow it before sleeping. This mixture helps you sleep more soundly by removing phlegm from the throat.
Onions
Anti-inflammatory properties of onions make them good for asthma sufferers as they can alleviate restriction in airways due to asthma. Plus, onions have some amount of sulfur content which relieves inflammation in your lungs.
Onions can be eaten raw or if the taste of raw onions is too strong, they can be cooked too using a variety of methods.
Lemons
Asthma sufferers usually have low levels of vitamin C. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, lemon is effective in providing relief from symptoms of asthma.
Take a lemon, cut it into two, and squeeze one slice in a cup of water to drink. If you want, add a teaspoon or two of sugar. You can drink lemon water frequently to get relief from asthma symptoms.
In addition to lemon, blueberries, strawberries, papaya, and oranges also contain nutrients that help relieve symptoms of asthma.
Carom Seeds
Carom seeds act as a mild bronchodilator and is useful in mild to medium asthma conditions.
Take 1 teaspoon seeds and it into a pot of water. Boil the water and then breathe in the steam.
Alternatively, wrap a handful of carom seeds in a cotton cloth and heat it for a few minutes in the microwave. When the cotton cloth has become sufficiently hot, keep it on your chest and neck till it cools down. If necessary, repeat this a few times.
