Toothaches can get really serious if left unattended. Sometimes pain can be so excruciating that it can leave you crippled. Best way to treat your toothache would be to find out the real reason behind it.

Some usual treatments like salt water rinse, cold and hot compress, clove oil can give you temporary relief from your pain, but these treatments may not give you a permanent relief.

If your pain continues for more than two days, it is better to consult a dentist and get it treated professionally.

You may have to refrain from using the remedies mentioned here, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any medical condition.

1. Clove oil

Clove oil has been traditionally used to treat tooth pain. Dab some clove oil in a cotton bud and gently place it over the painful area. This might sting at first, but your pain will gradually come down after some time.

2. Ginger Paste

Make a paste out of dry ginger powder using a little water. Roll a small cotton ball into the paste and place it on your painful tooth for sometimes. It can irritate the gums, so keep the cotton in your mouth for a few minutes.

3. Myrrh Tea

Add 1 tsp of powdered myrrh in 2 cups of water and let it simmer for 30 mins. Strain it and let it cool down. Add 1 tsp of this solution to half a cup of water and use this mixture to rinse your mouth five to six times a day.

4. Peppermint tea Rinse

Make a tea out of dried peppermint leaves and let it cool down to a comfortable temperature. Swish this tea around your mouth and spit it out. Repeat it as often as necessary till the pain is reduced.

5. Use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

Swish some 3% hydrogen peroxide solution in your mouth and spit it out. This will kill off the harmful bacterias and provide some temporary relief. Rinse your mouth several times with plain water after spitting out the hydrogen peroxide solution.

6. Salt Water Gargle

Add a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and use a small part of the solution to rinse your mouth for up to 30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat this often as needed. Salt water will cleanse your mouth and reduce swelling.

7. Cold Compress

Take some small ice cubes in a plastic bag and apply it to the painful tooth for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will numb down the nerves in the area and reduces pain almost instantly. Alternatively, you can also use an ice pack.

8. Warm Wet Tea Bag

This a traditional handy remedy for toothaches. Place a warm wet tea bag to the painful tooth for few minutes and take it out. Black tea contains tannins, which is an astringent that reduces swelling and pain in your tooth.

9. Vanilla Extract

Dab a small cotton ball in vanilla extract and place it over the painful tooth for 10 to 15 minutes. Vanilla extract contains alcohol which will numb down the pain in your tooth. Additionally, it has antioxidant properties which help to reduce inflammation in the area.

10. Guava Leaves Tea

Add some crushed guava leaves to a cup of water and let it steep in simmer for about 15 minutes. Strain out the leaves and cool it down to a comfortable temperature. Use this tea to rinse your mouth as often as necessary.
