Ragi porridge is one of the popular dishes in Southern parts of India during summer. It is had along with little mango pieces or fryums. It is one of the most loved food during the summer season. Ragi has many health benefits packed with it, it helps to reduce weight and it is easily digestible as well.

Ragi has its native in Ethiopia. It belongs to Poaceae family. Its scientific name is Eleusine Coacana.

A dry place with moderate heat is the right environment for this crop. India cultivates Ragi for over 4000 years. Southern states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are major producers of ragi in India. Apart from India, countries like Africa, Madagascar, Srilanka, Malaysia, China, and Japan are major producers of this crop.

Ragi is rich in carbohydrate content that supplies us with needed energy. Apart from that, it contains 7.7 percent of protein and 3.6 percent of fiber. 100 grams of rage contains nearly 336 calories of energy.

It has very low quantities of fat. 100 grams of rage only contains about 1.3 percent of fat. It contains vital minerals such as calcium and iron. Additionally, it has moderate levels of vitamins such as niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin. These nutrients are very vital for proper bodily functions and overall health.

It contains amino acids such as Valine, Isoleucine, Threonine, Leucine, and Methionine. Among these, Valine amino acid helps with proper functioning of the tissues and adds strength to the muscles. Additionally, it helps with digestion as well.

Isoleucine amino acid helps with the production of blood cells and regulates blood sugar levels. Threonine amino acid strengthens protein in the body. Additionally, it prevents the deposition of bad cholesterol in the liver.

Methionine plays a vital role in hair and skin growth. It helps in the contraction of yellowish or brownish fatty substance called lecithin. It can potentially dissolve the bad cholesterol deposited in the kidneys and liver.
